On July 26, 2023, Rev. Dr. Tommie Jackson, a respected pastor and community leader in Stamford, Connecticut, was tragically killed after being struck by a police vehicle while crossing the street in front of his home.

The officer involved, Zachary Lockwood, was driving at over the speed limit, responding to a non-emergency call from over thirty minutes prior. Although his emergency lights were on, his siren and emergency lights were used intermittently.  He was later charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle.

Lockwood was offered a plea deal,2 years in prison, 3 years probation, and removal from the police force after a year of paid leave. The officer refused the deal in April 2025, and the case is now set to go to trial in Milford Superior Court.

"No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man's permission when we require him to obey it. Obedience to the law is demanded as a right; not asked as a favor."
